About our Shoot
We recently wrapped up an absolutely incredible content shoot with these two exceptionally skilled gymnasts, and it was one of those sessions that reminds you why you love photography in the first place. Their energy, precision, and passion made every moment feel dynamic and alive, and it was a privilege to capture that talent through the lens.
Location
East Perth inlet proved once again why it’s one of my favourite locations for outdoor photography. The area offers a surprising variety of backdrops—tranquil water views, architectural elements, open walkways, and pockets of greenery that shift beautifully as the light changes. It’s the kind of place where you can walk just a few steps and find an entirely different mood or composition waiting to be explored. That said, shooting here definitely rewards planning. The light moves quickly, and depending on the time of day, shadows and reflections can either be your best friend or your biggest challenge. With a bit of foresight, though, it becomes an amazing creative playground.
Natural Light
For this session, we committed to shooting exclusively with natural light. No on-camera or off-camera flash—just the sun, the environment, and the gymnasts in their element. Working this way forces you to be more intentional with angles and timing, but it also gives the images a clean, authentic feel that artificial lighting can’t always replicate. The natural highlights and soft shadows added so much depth to their movements, and the warm tones later in the day were perfect for capturing those dramatic mid-air moments.
Despite the fast-changing light, we managed to create a wide variety of photographs, from powerful action shots to more serene, candid portraits. The gymnasts were incredible to work with—patient, enthusiastic, and willing to try every idea we threw at them. Shoots like this remind me how much collaboration fuels creativity, and I’m genuinely excited to share more from this session.
