Planning a photo Session

When it comes to a photo session, what are you looking for?

  • Do you have a plan in mind when you book a session?
  • Are there any specific shots you’re looking at capturing?
  • Do you expect your photographer to direct you to get your shots?

These are three questions that spring to mind to me as a photographer that I often have go through my head when I am conducting a photo session. Although every participant is going to be different, you still need to have some plan in mind when you attend your shoot. A basic plan is a must.

Why? In many instances, your photographer is not going to know you. They are not going to know your capabilities and skill level. For me, I was a competitive gymnast and I also taught aerial circus skills for a number of years. I can give guidance in those areas and also some basics in dance as I’ve learned quite a lot in the years I’ve been taking photos. It still really helps me however if you have a little bit of an idea beforehand.

When I send out a booking confirmation, I will remind you to take a look online. Check out some of your favourite dancers, gymnasts or performers that you really admire. Get some ideas, save them to your phone or iPad and bring them along with you. I also try to take a look at peoples social pages if I can beforehand to get a bit of an idea but that’s not always possible if you have a private account.

Practice, practice, practice! Don’t go to your shoot and try things for the first time. It may take up some valuable time. If you know you can do something, it’s a great starting platform for you and your photographer. I try not to capture the same photos you may get in a performance or competition shot but if I can see that, I will often manipulate it or have you try something different but based on that skill.

Basically, please don’t expect the photographer to “Create your shoot”. Yes we can generally assist you but having a bit of an idea beforehand is a big help!

I hope this may help you in preparing for your photo session with whichever photographer you’re shooting with.
